Road Traffic Collision Safety

Ensuring Safety for All

When dealing with road traffic collisions (RTCs), it's essential to prioritize the safety of both the patient and ourselves.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Mandatory Gear: Always wear PPE, including helmets, glasses, visors, safety boots with steel toe caps, and fluorescent jackets.

Protection: PPE safeguards against hazards such as sharp edges from cutting equipment, glass fragments, and sharp edges on vehicle components.

Consideration of Road Conditions

Be mindful of road surfaces and conditions, including oil or mud, which can increase the risk of slips and trips.

Vigilance: Assess footwear and tread on boots to minimize slip and trip hazards.

Awareness of Hazards

Approach RTCs with caution, being aware of potential dangers to yourself and the patient.

Risk Mitigation: Take precautions to avoid self-harm or exacerbating injuries, particularly with patients who may have spinal or neck injuries.

Preventing Fire Hazards

Exercise extreme caution regarding spilled fuels and hot exhaust pipes, which can pose fire risks, especially before the fire service arrives.

Alertness: Be cautious of bystanders smoking near fuel leaks, as smoking in such situations can be extremely hazardous.

Priority: Minimize risks to patients by reducing potential fire hazards to the lowest level possible.
